Thoughts on the winners?

2yo Vallour Road
3yo Perfect Jewel
4yo up Pounomu

Not sure about the last two, but who else?

Apparently it was a dead heat between Material man and Pounomu for racehorse of the year

That's a great outcome I reckon. Both horses had an outstanding season and opinions were divided on who was the champ

who or where do the votes come from and is it on a 3,2,1 system etc

as for the 3yo crown, that could of easily went to Art Series as she had more starts and a better strike rate... Epic Grey could have been a chance too or if Money Maher had of won the Derby that surely would have been enough to win 3yo of the year?

I have no idea how it's judged or based so my opinion means FA

I would have gone material man.. just my opinion tho

Yep agree, I was going to add that too, if the voting ended at the end of the 17/18 season (4 days ago) then Material Man certainly produced better efforts towards the end of the season to have that award nailed on

    Pounamu as a 4yo 8 starts and 2 wins

    MM as a 4yo 9 starts 5 wins and 2 seconds

    go figure.....

may aswell just given it to the people's horse for being so gallant in defeat in all his starts running behind the 2 mentioned above..
The WATC Derby is far more superior to a Railway and KT anyway  :P ;))

not to compare but the western racepix award is all about the amount of wins not the amount of prizmoney
  • paraleticparaletic    3,750 posts
Understandable, but i would have thought these "tie breakers" would have at least been looked at like 1) most wins 2) prizemoney etc

Either way im not bothered who won just interested to see who had more $ last season

Just to clarify the results from the season for the two horses of the year @hash:

    Pounamu 8 starts, 3x wins (G1. G2. G3) , 2x seconds (G2. G3), 2x 3rds (G3. G3) $1,148,000
    Material Man 9 starts, 5x wins (G2. G3. G3. G3. L), 2x seconds (G1. G2) $975,000 prizemoney

I think Pounamu deserves it, purely for redeeming himself from the status of the "Dirty Big Stinking Grey Pig" ~X( that burned many punters at short odds before hitting his straps ;))

thats really interesting. From that i can see why they called a dead heat. A group 1 win is a group 1 win i suppose.

Without looking at those stats i would have gone Material Man especially with the way he finished the season off.

Damien just asked a reasonable question, rio.

in my opinion, neither of them!!
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Pounamu has had a crack fair to say (in Sydney at least) I reckon Material Man could win the right race.

Wow falcon said something negative, who would have thought....

Both would win races in Melb placed well.

The Poo doesn't have enough quality to drag him into the races in Perth. With more pressure up front and with good horses to cart him into the race, the Poo could jag something decent in Victoria.

The very fact you're all arguing the outcome would suggest a dead heat was in deed the correct decision.

Neither is at the end of their career, so which one will ultimately prove to be the better horse ?

my money is Material Man. Nothing was getting past it this winter, it was totally bomb proof. In saying that, i do also like the Pou, i actually backed it to win the railway, even over my own horse.
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts
So do they have to win in Melbourne to be a better horse????

Okay i'd suggest The Poo might, but it is so subjective that the opinion is matched with another please explain?!?!?!?
    :-?? :-?? :-??

I dont know if i am missing something or have just gone around the corner and down the road a few miles of the cranky old Bas...d Road!?!?!
