Hard one....Tiger Moore in top 3 and Mark Grigsby knocking on the door with Gerry Donnelly......but we are splitting hairs here, no correct answer.

agree JJ no definitive answer just wanted to see who posters thought was their top 5.Mark Grisby rode 100 winners in a season as a apprentice i think, then went to Hong Kong or Singapore and had a nasty fall. There could be so many names added to that list . K.Watson D.Brosan the list could go on

No reflection on their charachter Falcon. But i wouldnt have had the impecably attired S.Geyer or the ever spitting B.Duggan on my list of great money riders

anyone see or meet ex Qld champion jock Shane Scriven at Ascot yesterday...
rode both Scenic Blast and Scenic Shot for memory, cant say i've seen an ex jockey 'grow' so big after retiring  :-O

Not surprising hash. I recall when he had some time off late in his career he got to over 70kg in a short time and then had a real struggle to get back ti riding weight

Where would Craig Wake rank in this topic? I've only ever heard him spoken about in glowing terms but was a bit too young to know for myself if he was that good.

That's the thing Spink, as JJ said splitting hairs - same as cricketers and footballers, so on a slightly different slant put down my favourite 5, best 5 can't be proven but nobody can argue with your favourite five.

    Favourite Five.
    Rod Kemp.
    Jeff Noske.
    Craig Wake.
    Linda Martin.
Bernie Ryan and Peter Barnett for six.

The two fella's that stand out as the best - only saw JJ Miller at the end of his career he was bloody good, can only imagine him at the peak of his prowess.

Rod Kemp - a favourite and a best - which says abit about him.

A wide diverse range there. Gee the name Linda Martin, have not heard for ever. Just disappeared off the scene from what I remember. Peter Barnett was a good hoop too, I think weight got him if I am correct ?

Good one there VKid - we like the nostalgia and those great days but agree Damien Oliver and Damian Lane - they'd measure up to anybody. Oliver been at it along time - recall being at Ascot when he came back to Perth to ride during the carnival for a day well over a decade and a half ago, - was the best day's riding had seen. He was taking runs and timing runs amazingly well. Winners and placegetters all day and not neccesarily favourite's.

Lane he's been remarkable. Great hoop, laid back and unassuming, a natural.

Peter Moran - Alpine Wind was a ripper can recall he rode.

Linda Martin a great pioneer for lady hoops admired her - had that steely eyed look of determination - and my goodness in the tough competive game - she needed to.

Every winner and placegetter rode - she earnt it. No airs and graces, no showing off - just a bit of guts.

Peter Barnett yep liked him - quiet achiever he was. Many horses carrying 48 and 52kgs back then and if a horse got up to 54kgs it was begining to carry some weight - no wonder blokes like Peter Barnett could find the weight issue a bit difficult.

Have always said though when it came to lady hoops - Trenna Skinner was the cutest!
Alana Sansom - outstanding and Paula Wagg mixed it with and beat the best.

One hoop mentioned the other day another fave Jon Claite.

Will never forget the opening race at Belmont on a cold wet Saturday - The Hunt Club race for the amateur jockeys.

Ascot - on a warm/hot Saturday - opening race - the Powder Puff Derby for the female hoops. Don't think you'd get away with the term "powder puff" when it comes to the ladies today. They might smack you one haha.

They weren't on every Saturday - but both in their own special way when on were something good and something different.

    A brief top-of-mind personal Top 5:

1 The day at Belmont when the Penguin was dagging around the back of the Ring looking for jobs/favours/small change.
He was rolling up some carpet to put away one Stand when he bowled over Donny Martin who went a-over-t. If looks could kill, Don’s furious face would’ve massacred him.

    2. George Grljusich was a notorious jinx and non-winner. I remember once standing near to him watching an E/S race where David Hayes had a 6/4 favourite and a 10/1 outsider engaged. No prizes for guessing who George was on, and who actually won. George let fly with a solid kick to the nearest bin, with the words “that f@$&en c@&t Hayes”, which still sticks in my memory today.

    3. Paul King was going through a very lean trot. After yet another non-winning ride, some wags ran through the Ring banging on a drum & unfurling a banner with “Congrats P. King 100 Losing Rides” on it. Humorous.

    4. Every single New Years Day meant the following: a 2-mile Perth Cup, a capacity field, 43 degree heat, and a bumper well-lubricated crowd. None of the above will occur again (except possibly the weather), and we’re all the worse off for it. My personal fave was Time Frame leading start-to-finish at 20/1 in the late 90s.

    5. My personal favourite was the 2008 Winterbottom and a classic finish between two mighty horses. Takeover Target remains my favourite ever. After the last, was having a drink at the back bar when Joe Jeniak walked by. Hadn’t done this before nor since but asked him to scribble in the race book and stop for a Middy. He obliged on both counts.

    Same
Moore Treen  Harvey  Kemp Miller. Caught the tail end of  moore & treen,s careers but both rode over 2,000 winners...both was as good as anyone on the eastern seaboard.photos very similar style crouched down low, using the horse as a semi-wind break, and both very kind with the whip. Tiger Moore first winner was a Coolgardie cup,and his last winner was a st ledger...… Once read article which treen mentioned the greatness of moore as a rider.Moore also served two 12 months suspensions. still 2,000 wins

Kemp at 33, was just at the peak of his powers had won 3  or 4 premierships, 11 group ones,-- remember when he broke grisbys state record on horse at Kalgoorlie called todbury
Sure w.a had Australian derby first think it was Barnett against  dittman hard act ,something dancer? it was 20 something hits by dittman to barnetts couple if i,can remember rightly he did give him much room,in the lane.

What a great bloke. Getting in spitting distance was only your mistake.
All the same he was one of life's gentlemen and a very good rider in his prime I hear.

Stg that would've been the Tommy Smith trained Key Dancer late 80's...was a hot favourite and from memory nailed Hard Act on the line in the Australian Derby trained by Lou Luciani.
