Any thoughts on the weekend ahead and in particular with the harness racing aspect of it?

I am attending the barrier draw function tomorrow which will be streamed via Facebook from 1:00pm.

I like the concept but I would like to understand better how the slots are awarded.
    Can someone explain.

Yeah im not sure how it works either - but i think they buy into  them

Like Ray Jones pacer - i read this a while back - but someone buys the right - to be involved with that horse - so i suppose they pay Jones a sum of money for that right

And likewise in Vic - I  read that boom pacer that Taiba once trained - still owns - but Stewart now trains - Danny someone a prolifilic owner - hes got or bought that interest in the horse - because Taiba said - look its great to have Danny onboard in this concept - so i imagine he offered the most money to Tabia for that right

Slot holders bought the slot for 70k odd, then they negotiate with horse owners a % of stake money in the race that the slot holder gets

What if there is more slot holders than slots that’s what I don’t get.
  • ChariotsonfireChariotsonfire    3,025 posts
Basically individuals or companies buy a slot and then fill it with one of their own horses or negotiate with connections of suitable horses to fill their slot.

Buying a slot for the Nullabor is a big investment ($75,000 I believe) with not only finding the right horse but then sweating on tomorrow's barrier draw.

Not sure of the break up of the $1m in stake money.

Cheers but still doesn’t answer my question.
What if there is 10 applicants and 9 slots.
How are the 9 slot holders determined.

First in best dressed 10 slot holders were announced some weeks back and slots have been progressively filled over the weeks with the last announcement being Steel The Show by Team Bond.

Slot holder Swandoo did not have a suitable horse in their own team so negotiated with the connections of Loyalist to travel across the Nullabor for The Nullabor.

I would imagine that in the initial draft if there was more than 10 applicants it may have been decided by ballot.

Cost of a slot was $70,000, RWWA tops up with $300,000.

    Prize money payout:

    1st $500,000  2nd $175,000   3rd  $90,000   4th $60,000, 5th to 10th  receive $27,500

In the event of there being more applicants than slots, allocation to be made on which applicant could bring the best promotional package to the table in support of the race, details to be provided upon application.

    Cheers for that guys.
I would like to see the concept applied to more races doesn’t matter if it’s a 20.0k race or the present format.
Don’t know if it could work but could be an interesting concept if it did.

For me The Quoka has had great traction but I feel both other codes have probably lacked a bit. The harness code for a long time has been well below what I'd deem an acceptable level of media/advertising. Dogs are a bit different, turnover wise they continue to go great guns and I'm not sure they really have the capacity out there for a big crowd if they were to pump it up too much.

I've seen a few posts lately via social media and they have been quite good but it could be a case of too little too late for any type of crowd at P.

I'm in the car/on the road a large chunk of most days, listen to sport FM for most of that, not sure outside Ernie's little slot and the replay of the preview i've heard the race mentioned-they should have been advertising it for months.

I've got 2 kids under 5, is there going to be anything on track Friday night to keep them entertained? Again this should be advertised you shouldn't have to go looking for it.

So as far as I'm concerned, solid concept-on paper they have 3 great races coming up but they have done nowhere near enough to promote it.

Mag Storm finally gets a barrier

The " Race " is as good as over  - TAB.COM who dont muck around - theyd pay out on the winner already

I read a RWWA release dated 5th April - Rob Tomlinson - part owner of  Regency Foods  slots - look we looked over East for another Slot horse but we settled on a local Typhoon Banner - Rob also has another slot horse in MS

No pressure  on Aldo at all now - could have been alot of pressure if the No 1 was a genuine lead horse - but MS will be gifted the lead - and it will be all over after 80 yards - like alot of GP races mind you

Yes the 1 doesn't contest the lead but surely the NSW visitor will be handlebars down as it is a great chance of crossing. Even Lavra Joe might be keen to have a dabble.

The starting point we see most wide horses crossing from aswell.

I think Joe may test M.S not so perfect gate at the start Marko?

If there’s any early pressure JJM will be all over them.

For obvious reasons I think Typhoon Banner will hold the lead unless it is certain that Magnificent Storm is the heir apparent.

Any reason odds up for Wokka and sandgroper
    Nothing for Nullarbor.
    WhAt is going on here.
JJM to firm Diego to drift when released

It was up around 5.30. JJM was around 16 from memory which I thought was a nice bet price, probably should be around 8. But if were all going to be on it may be too much of a handbreak!

JJM $21 with Bet365 provided you can get on.

The market is up on Tabtouch under Future Final Field with JJM @ $19 and $4.

Just watched a few replays and MS is $1.70

To me there is only a couple of dangers to it - 2 of the NSW horses Loyalist and Betterzippit - looking  at their form - they have raced against far inferior horses - so i cant see either of them winning - however they have  had starts over 1600 at Menangle - so they could have blistering gate speed - and that might make things interesting at the start

Spirit of St Louis  the 3rd of the 3 NSW horses - i think its got the best chance of an upset - only trouble - it was racing far better 12 mths ago - back to back Shepp/Balarat Cups in great time  - 2nd to King of Swing in the Hunter Cup- 25.9 last qtr . This year  no where near as good 3rd last in Geel Cup - run queried

I did think its 1st up run at GP was ok - 27 last qtr - it hit the line allright - and if i had my life riding on it - and i had to pick a horse to beat Magnificent Storm - i would pick Spirit of St Louis

    It was ordinary Marko.
I reckon it’s form will follow into this race finishing midfield after a soft run.
    Anyhow time will tell.
  • ChariotsonfireChariotsonfire    3,025 posts
Bettorzippit $5.00 to $4.60 and Jumping Jackmac $19 to $11. One would suggest interstate money for the former and that the forumites have launched into the latter.

Magnificent Storm out to $1.85 and yesterday's panel of Glen Moore, Ken Casellas and Trent Cooper thought it would reach black figures at some stage.

The scheduling is completely crackers. The dogs Sandgroper on the SAME night as the Trots Nullabor on the SAME night as the NZ slot race.

The Nullabor is race 9 at 8.54pm (there goes your Eastern States audience and turnover), the Sangroper at 7.38pm. Some extremely knowledgeable confidant of the inner circle posted that the race 9 decision was to give time for the media to get from Cannington to Gloucester Park. Seriously?

Presentations aside, they have 76 minutes....interviews, photos, post race, find your car and then hotfoot it over the causeway to get to GP just as the mobile pulls away.

Trots Friday Night, Races Saturday Afternoon, Dogs on their usual Saturday Night .... it is a no brainer. From the get go, the scheduling defied logic.
