Upcoming 150K Cranbourne Cup , a great rivalry is developing between Kingman and Leap To Fame - this what use to happen in yester year - but there was about 6-7 topliners going at each other , but these type of clashes create great interest

Will Luke keep the lead on Kingman over the long distance

Gammalite and Poppy like racing again .

Or Pure Steel and Rip Van Winkle

Great win by Leap To Fame , and  the Cranbourne track the home straight is 221 metres and LTF needed every inch of it
There has also been exciting harness racing at AP tonight - 100-1 50-1 20-1  winners and they all came from a mile back in the run , but the AP home straight is 197 metres

Where as GP home straight is a pidddly 143 metres , but the selfish miserable Bs in charge of WA  Trotting are point blank refusing WA residents from seeing brilliant/exciting trotting in Perth , because they have got their head stuck in the sand , or to quote Vinnie Knight they have got their heads stuck somewhere else , so unfortunately WA Metro trotting keeps its 50 year out of date 800 metre toy track -

But on a positive note , that is the 2nd best Cranbourne Pacing Cup ,ive seen , the best of course was the mighty Paleface Adios , a NSW horse it had its last run in the Cranbourne Cup - it triumphed and on a  Monday working day in Melb they got 7000 in attendance

Oh yes, a great contest alright, I thought Kingman had hi a 100m out but Leap To Fame never gives in, great champion.

Marko, I'll chuck another fantastic Cranbourne Cup into the mix...the night Christen me and Terror To Love went to war around 2013 or 2014. It produces sensational racing that track....especially with champion horses.

Im Themightyquinn and Mr Feelgood also had an epic battle in a Cranbourne Cup.

Cranbourne Cup 1980 was when Paleface Adios chalked up his 100th Win
  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,325 posts
Old Paleface it was its 100th win was it , maybe you could argue it should have been its 101st ?

Watched quite a few of the old replays on the public holiday , one of them being Royal Force winning the 1977 Miracle Mile , very good drive by Dudley Anderson from a wide gate getting behind the leader allways looked the winner , but Paleface pelted to just miss , but Colin Pike dropped his whip at the top of the home straight . Pure Steel , J Retzlaff actually galloped at release and gave them 50 metres, so its chances went out the window

Also watched the Big race at the Valley , the one you told me Gath won on Koala King , entitltled to win , run of the race behind the leader and got the split in the straight , Gammalite was the run of the race , i think it ran 2nd , did it do it tough in the last lap , out 3 wide and under the bat from the last 1000 metres

Also watched some of , a video on Village Kid , the full video goes for just over 19 minutes , its got a picture of ACL on front , a couple of things from that , point 1 - and im not stirring , but when it won the Pacing Cup , Coulson hit the horse  quite a few times from the top of the straight with a shoulder length action , he just did . And point 2 - the narrator if i have got this right e , and i havent got time to watch it again at present ( because i should be doing some paid  work and i will be in a second ), but im certain  he said that after that Pacing Cup win that Gordon Cox gifted 50% of the horse to Bill Horn and his wife . A couple of posters have said that Cox was a miserable type , so if he did do that it is most surprising.

Gordon Cox paid the $34,653 purchase price for Village Kid from owner Brian Notman (plus expenses involved to get him to Perth, airfare, floating, clearance fees etc). Notman had paid $500 to breeder Irvin Behrns for him as a weanling when Behrns decided to change codes to thoroughbreds.

Bill Horn's 50% share in the horse was paid out of the stakemoney won. It was the same arrangement with Governor Guiness.....Cox paid for the horse and then let Horn cut his half share out in the prizemoney won.

Coulson did indeed land a few on Village Kid in the home straight in that Cup win over the mighty Preux Chevalier as a 4 year old.

Quote from Bill Horn post race: " After the race, Phil apologised for hitting Village but he had been worried that Willie may have stopped short of the post due to his inexperience." Page 51 The Village Kid Story by Alan Parker.

Kingman given the circumstances did run a mighty race in the Cranbourne Pacing Cup

I can remember Dan M - the racecaller saying in an earlier race that Luke M has been replaced by Ryan Sanderson  on Ghost of time i think which won , but McCarthy and Kingman and his other top horse are now safely on the track

Luke said he was driving the float on Hume Highway with Nathan Jack on board , when they heard a loud bang , stopped the car , smoke pouring out of the float , scrambled to get the horses off , then the float burst into flames ( still dont know what caused it ) , Some elderly bloke came down and lent them the oldest float of all time , but it got them to the track . Seeing it got beat there iis no 1mil bonus , so he is going to skip the 150k Kilmore Cup , have a week off and then go into the A G Hunter Cup

Season 77 /78  = Clews only play a few seasons and then became a state selector for many years . Hughes is one of few who played cricket for nsw and 1st grade footy with Bulldogs ( hughes famous footy brothers in Syd ) and then become a media personality in Sydney . Thompson only played a few games of that season and Johnston debuted that season and was injury plagued finishing 81 / 82 .

There were actually 2 x David Johnston's playing first class cricket in Australia back in that era.
    The NSW batsman pictured.
And the other was the SA bowler who was the son of former Test player of the 1940s/50s Bill Johnston.

Race 5 just run at Northam. Have we just witnessed the most incompetent display yet by WA Stewards?? How was that race not called off? The catcher cuts through the middle of the field to catch a driverless horse putting all those horses and drivers at risk. Unbelievable.

Had the trifecta for a lousy 8% but was going to be a big one!!

No problems with calling the race off…but that should have been about 30 mins earlier when the catcher had to come onto the track.

Even at the completion of the event - another 25 mins before race eventually abandoned. My goodness what do they talk about ?!!

The best three runs in the “race” were Brewery Lane, Bobby Waterhouse and Dats Lovely.

They ran 1,2 3 or 4th never got the result of photo for third.

Race should have been abandoned but going back to 80’s and 90’s been on track and seen a lot worse and all clear pay tote within 5 minutes!

Victorian Harness Racing is certainly broke , and you would think the exodus of participants  will continue to survive

Geelong Pacing Cup on tonight a 20K race , that is beyond pathetic !!!

Looking forward to the Miracle Mile tonight ,what a great field, the best I've  seen for years .
Hoping Larry can hold them at bay, definitely no easy task.
Grimson, tacks a leg on most horses he gets and his most recent aquisition Chase A Dream might be the the big improver.
At the price, you don't have to have too much on to get a decent result, if he happened to salute.
Wouldn't be surprised who won, they all have a case.

1967 full set Scanlen vfl cards - $895 the price tag

Yes there is Polly Farmer - and Ron Barassi also a great picture of Hassa Mann , who later Capt/Coached Sth Fremantle to a flag

However the interesting one is Eric Sarich- 3rd row 1st on the left - he had a couple of years with South Melb

Maybe i can entice Chariots back to the forum , but something happened between Sarich and Barassi , there was real  ill blood between them , in fact Sarich sued Barassi , maybe Ronald Dale questioned his courage , i dont know
