What a great start to the tour.

El Cheatador going down in stage 1 and now nearly 2 mins off the pace of Cadel and co and Cadel winning his first ever stage on merit. He won the stage just pipping Cheatador and another cheat Vinokourov who was banned and stripped off the only other stage win Cadel has to his name.

A joke of a sport that allows for, and even encourages drug users with its lax penalties, but the tour is such a great spectacle.

When they hit the Pyrenees next weekend there will be fireworks no doubt as Cheatador will need to pull of some huge moves to get back into the race.

Hopefully Cadel has the team to get him the win this year but as usual the siamese twins have a strong team lead by the Nazi.

Cheatador doesn't seem to have the sme power this year.
    Hmmmm........I wonder why that is ? :?:

wouldnt write AC off just yet.

im happy with the start had a very big bet on the field to beat AC before the start of the race thinking he wouldnt have many friends on tour and the giro kms hopefully still in his legs might take its toll.

short uphill finishes suit cadel but dunno if cadel or his team team is strong enough to get him through the mountains for the win. all he has done at the moment is stay on his bike.

think andy might have just saved himself last night. dunno how hes going considering he didnt do many leadup events but hes got frank in the mountains to help him this year.

i actually like the stage by stage betting and took the $41 on offer for Tom Boonen tonight. would also like to see goss get a crack at a stage win later on.

I can't see Contador making up the time on Schleck anywhere except the individual time trial.
Cadel will have far better support this year than previously, as last night proved. I big effort to get back and win after stopping to changed bikes with 15k's to go
Should also go a bit better in the mountains this year without the fractured elbow....

Schleck the one to beat. Vinikourov not without a chance, Gesink the smokey, but how good would it be to see an Aussie win :D

Survival instinct kicked in, us or them. Next time they will think twice about riding a bike when they could be driving up those hills!

    But seriously, that was bad.

hahaha probably still wouldnt be enough i probably should have said in flat stages.

looking forward to tonight. will give a good indication who will be on the podium i reckon. frank schleck for stage win for me at 10.50 and few dollars on kruiziger at 51.

hope cadel can sit on their wheels the whole way. hes not as explosive climbers as the schlecks and contador but hopefully he can just grind away and stay with them.

dying to know whether the schlecks have the balls to test contadors knee early or if they are just gonna ride defensive mind you its only first of three mountain stages maybe test it later on.

Some of the commentators have said they would be surprised if the attacks from the big C riders came early in the mountain stages.

Will be interesting to watch tonights stage, but I reckon BMC and Leopard happy to sit on Contador for the moment given they have so much time up their sleeve. Apparently the Schlecks are very worried about Cadel this year given his form and the strength of his team this year compared to previous years.

I think Cantador isn't in it.
Is carrying an injury and just going through the motions.
    Not a threat.
Is between Cadel and Andy Schleck for GC win

I haven't even heard his name called this year.

Looking at the standings he is a minute behind Cadel and Andy, think he would be struggling to place but shouldn't be too far behind the big chances on standings.

dont worry you will hear him called sooner or later.

    Entertaining stage.

Knew the schlecks would attack was gonna be very supprised if they didn't.

Cadel and frank looked strong, Andy hard to judge even though the commentators kept demanding he was looking gone he closed gaps with ease when he had too, contador might have given too much time away now and basso is dangerous.
  • octaviusoctavius    2,290 posts
    Cadel can't beat the Schleks.

He can't continue to shut down the dual attacks through the mountains.
  • ericwanduericwandu    544 posts
but they need a fair bit of time over him for the ITT

but i do agree with 5 or so mountain stages left its gonna take some doing to not give them too much time to chase down.
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
Cadel is best off not trying to fend off the attacks, but rather ride between them / cover the second one.
If he finishes second (of those three) every day, and Frank and Andy alternate first and third - Cadel will still come out on top.
  • TheFunksterTheFunkster    3,840 posts
Best form of defense is attack. Rather than worrying about the Schlek's he should think about attacking them.
He and Basso had the opportunity to at one stage there, just before Frank went

Basso was good last night, needs a couple more like that for the 50's e/w to look good but.

Comfortable with the $15 about Evans pre-tour, he just needs to keep the Schleks in sight then belt their ears off in the ITT.

Good to see my man Cunego still hanging around too, the mountains will suit him and he might sneak a stage win in the week ahead.
