UPDATE 11.25am: WEST Coast's Patrick McGinnity has been suspended for a week over comments made to Demon Ricky Petterd about his mum.
In a statement, the Eagles said McGinnity would miss this weekend's match against Essendon after an investigation found he had breached the AFL?s respect and responsibility policy.
The player has been fined $2500, will undergo counselling and will apologise to Petterd, the club said.
?I deeply regret the words I used in a verbal altercation on Sunday,? McGinnity said.
?The heat of the moment is no excuse for over-stepping the mark and I sincerely apologise to the Melbourne player who my comments were directed at.?
Ricky Petterd's father hit out at McGinnity's behaviour this morning.
Wayne Petterd said the Eagle had crossed the line when he unleashed a string of ugly comments about his son's mother.
McGinninty was charged under an AFL code of conduct regarding respect to women after the remarks during the weekend match at Etihad Stadium.
"I've played a lot of footy but it seems to have got to the stage where people are saying stuff over and above,'' Mr Petterd said.
"I just think this bloke has to learn to grow up. When you disrespect a player?s family, you have crossed the line.
"Ricky just said he was an idiot and that he didn't think about what he was saying. But he was upset by it sure, this guy actually said it twice it wasn't just in the heat of the moment.
"But I guess you just have to take it with a grain of salt. I'd tell him to grow a brain.''
He said the sledging had caught his son off guard but said he was determined not to let it affect his game.
The AFL will today announce a penalty for McGinnity after he was charged by umpires for vilification.
?We are investigating a matter and have no further comment," AFL media relations manager Patrick Keane said this morning.
Melbourne Football Club would make no comment under AFL laws.
It?s believed that investigation resulted in McGinnity issuing a telephone apology to Petterd last night.
One of the controlling umpires is said to have heard McGinnity?s comments and pursued the matter.
According to the sportsnewsfirst website, McGinnity?s comments were also heard by his teammate Will Schofield who was interviewed yesterday.
The last AFL player to be suspended for vilification was Western Bulldogs? Justin Sherman, for four matches in late June, when he was alleged to have racially abused Gold Coast teenager Joel Wilkinson.
Sherman, 24, was also fined a $5000 and ordered to have counseling and to attend education programs

You can't even sledge now....
If your not man enough to play a mans game Petterd, don't put your hand out for the pay cheque at the end of the day.
And then your dad had to pipe up as well....
Stick's and Stones boys!
Like I said on another thread, I'd rather get called names than get belted behind the play.......
We should leave the teaching of manners, correct treatment of women, name calling etc to their mothers.
UPDATE: AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou today said there was no place in the game for the vilification comments made by West Coast's Patrick McGinnity.
Midfielder McGinnity was suspended for one game and fined $2500 after sledging Melbourne?s Ricky Petterd at the start of the half-time break in Sunday?s match at Etihad Stadium, which the Eagles won by 48 points.
McGinnity made derogatory remarks about Petterd?s mother, with the Demons forward quickly alerting an umpire. Sources close to the player said McGinnity told Petterd he was going to "sleep with his mother".
Speaking at Parliament House in Perth where he was meeting WA football officials and State Government ministers about the planned new stadium, Demetriou said McGinnity was clearly in the wrong.
"We take these issues very, very seriously, there is absolutely no place for that sort of language or commentary on the football field, let alone out in the community," he said.
"There?s going to be sledging but you?ve got to be very, very careful about which areas you delve."
Demetriou congratulated Petterd for coming forward with the complaint and said he didn?t feel he would become a target for his decision.
McGinnity, 22, apologised after he was charged under the AFL?s code of conduct regarding respect to women.
?I deeply regret the words I used in a verbal altercation on Sunday,? McGinnity said. ?The heat of the moment is no excuse for over-stepping the mark and I sincerely apologise to the Melbourne player who my comments were directed at.?
Eagles CEO Trevor Nisbett quickly distanced the club from the player's comments.
?The comments made by Patrick do not reflect the values of our football club and we acted quickly when we became aware of the issue,? Nisbett said.
?We have high standards as a club, which we have continued to enforce in recent years and we are disappointed Patrick stepped outside those guidelines. We will continue to educate our players on their responsibilities around this and other AFL policies.?
In June, Western Bulldogs forward Justin Sherman was suspended for four matches and fined $5000 after pleading guilty to racially vilifying Gold Coast youngster Joel Wilkinson.
In saying that though a suspension, way over the top
And a cheap shot by you to REM at Pettards Dad, tell me you would not arc up if someone called your wife/GF or whatever a slag or something similar.
Far worse than a racist comment.
Anyone remember the Glann McGrath and Ramnaresh Sarwan incident?
McGrath to Ramnaresh Sarwan: ?So what does Brian Lara?s di*k taste like??Sarwan: ?I don?t know. Ask your wife."
McGrath (lost his cool): ?If you ever F**king mention my wife again, I?ll F**king rip your F**ing throat out.?
Now Sarwan even had probable cause, since McGrath instigated. But if he'd known McGrath's wife was battling cancer i'm sure he wouldn't have said it. Golden rule; keep family out of it.
sorry, dont see the difference myself.
If mcginnerty doesnt know pettard's mother, why would he even take such a sledge on board?
If someone called my wife a slag and I knew they didnt know her, I'd treat it as the load of garbage that it was and laugh it off.
He(rettard) is thin skinned and weak in my opinion. Its primary school playground stuff and should be treated as such. shouldnt be in the papers and we shouldnt even be talking about it.
If Petterd is "tough" enough to threaten to fly to Perth and 'Kill' the WCE player, surely he has to able able to accept any sledge that comes back in his direction.
If you want to start something like that, be prepared for the other person to either have lower morals, be quick witted or smarter than you in their response.
I would like to think family would be left out, but if you start something, don't go running to the umpire if you don't like the response.
WHY IS PETTERD NO BEING INVESTIGATED FOR THE SUPPOSED DEATH THREAT... Is Death < Respect to women in the AFL's eyes???
