JOCKEYS Michelle Payne, Michael Walker and Anthony Darmanin face possible two-year bans after being charged with betting on horse races.
The trio face a mandatory two-year disqualification if found guilty and penalties are handed down after March 1, when mandatory terms for serious offences are imposed nationally.
Victoria has broken ranks with NSW and Queensland's no-compromise stance on the new rules but guilty jockeys would only face a reduction through "extraordinary circumstances".
Payne said last night her alleged offences on one day in May 2011 were "a mistake".
The bets were a double involving So You Think running in Ireland and two multi bets on races and sports such as NBA and English Premier League. The bets totalled $450 - and all lost.
"It was so long ago, I can't really remember but I remember we had people around late one night and I'm guessing someone used my Sportsbet account thinking they'd logged out of their own," Payne said.
Jockeys are allowed to bet on sports, but not horse racing.
Darmanin is alleged to have placed two unsuccessful bets in April 2011 totalling $100 - involving races, AFL, NBA and MLB.
One bet included "any other jockey" winning the Cranbourne Jockey Challenge. He rode at Cranbourne in two races that day.
Walker's four losing racing bets in late 2011 totalled $57.
Each of the jockeys is alleged to have made bets in accounts held in their name.
Damien Oliver was disqualified for 10 months in November after being found guilty of placing a bet on a race at Moonee Valley in 2010.
Racing Victoria will hold an inquiry into the charges on Tuesday.

but I agree...I think there are bigger issues in racing than nailing jockeys for novelty bets like these.
For once, I think you're totally wrong. It's about culture. If you don't pick them up for little things, the jockeys' will constantly push the envelope.
No one ever takes a marijuana joint, apart from idiots, on a Singapore inbound flight. Why? Because they know of the ramifications.
Either you let them bet or you don't. You can't be wishy- washy.

jocks are surrounded by gambling every day...it has got to rub off.
these 3 were nabbed having a harmless flutter on their own accounts from their own phones.
payne linked a world famous horse racing in IRELAND with footy teams.....syt was probably odds on.
darmanin spent 100 bucks on unsuccessful bets, involving a challenge into footy bets

The problem occurs when they bet on something other than their own mount that's when you get a massive conflict of interest, make it known that they will come down on that like a ton of bricks but to be practical jockeys, drivers, trainers should be able to bet on their own charges.
Trainers can bet freely on horses other than their own if they don't have a horse engaged in a race why should it be any different for jockeys if they're not riding in a race.
Rather than yet again try to shove something under the rug that everyone knows occurs why not actually be open and accountable make a rule that says you can bet but those bets have to go through accounts nominated by you whether they be corporates, TAB, betfair, whatever, and these accounts must be in your name and if you make bets anywhere else or someone has other bets for you we will come down on you and them like a ton of bricks with extremely severe penalties and draft those penalties accordingly, lengthy disqualifications minimum 5 years etc.
Make these penalties so untenable that the risk isn't worth it to them and those involved with them and that they can quite easily make money or attempt to make money by punting through their own nominated accounts.
Radical yes but far more practical and realistic than the nonsense that is going on currently.
These three offences were minor and this is where the stewards want discretionary powers. (atleast within WA anyway)
They'll each get 3 months and warned to be more careful in the future. None of the bets were in races they contested and the bets were of such small amounts they couldn't be deemed an issue.
Most people would agree the Oliver offence deserved 2 years, but these deserve a small suspension and warning only.
As for the allowance for jockeys to bet on horse racing (and being monitored), there is no place for that. Keep it simple and allow no jockey betting on horseracing - simple!

AC's idea of allowing jockeys to punt would be a big mistake and the industry would be scandalous in no time. A ridiculous suggestion.

The problem of Jockeys having a punt will Never stop,well not in my life time.
Maybe Andrew Demetriou can come up with a secret formula to fix the problem

Jockeys should not be allowed to bet on horse racing.I think there will always be those who disregard the rules(this will never stop).
The rules should stand at all cost.Allowing Jockeys to bet would be a can of worms.
Regarding AD comment..I was referring to the secret formula for AFL...bullshit...how long will that be a secret.(tongue in cheek)

Pacing drivers can punt on harness racing so long as they aren't driving in that race.
Aren't both codes under RWWA?

To be honest, this subject is not even really worth debating. Think I might stop here and if anybody on here thinks jockeys should be punting on horse racing, I'll just assume they're plum crazy.
