Saturday Maiden

West Australian Racing
I know I've spoken about this before, but that race on Saturday,is an absolute disgrace to be on a Saturday race card.
As some of you have commented before, the reason for them are the full fields. WELL GUESS WHAT 11 RUNNERS.
PLEASE REPLACE THE RACES WITH EITHER CLASS1 OR CLASS 3 RACES,where at least you have a chance of seeing the horse race again on a Saturday, instead of going to Woop Woop for its next race start.
+1 -1

Hang on.  @RIO and myself have one coming up soon (ish) that will be first up as a 4 year old.  Think of us struggler's who only dream of a Saturday winner..... :(|)

I can't say I back any horses in the maidens because of the lack of form.  But I can't say I back the 2 y/o races either for the same reason, and they give them a $60K race every week.   A couple of mystery bets is about it.

I'd like to know if the experiment has returned bigger turn over then a field of 7?

I've got a 4yo Maiden as well, and I would have no hesitation of nominating for a Saturday. But I'm looking at the overall picture. Some of the Class 1 and 3 would be full fields with $30,000 in stake and would be very competitive racing

Woop Woop  :D  Foxy Lad won one, after been beaten everywhere and took a hammering in rating points. He was Rated 50 when unplaced at Collie, then next 6 starts for a second, two 3rds, 3 unplaced in the bush, so still about a 50 rating when won City Maiden. So roughly cost it 14 points for winning in town & will not be winning another one anytime soon.

Most Country Maidens would be run for about $12,000 so city Maiden $30,000 think highest should be penalised is $30k/$12k = 2.5, so Penalty should be about 8 Rating point at the most

Any horse that wins a Maiden is a 62rater for males and 58rater after a provincial or Midweek metro win.For Saturday maidens it must be 64 and 60. Which means when you nominate for a class 1 (next class ) you will recieve 60kg.

I have another one - i trait I'm trying to get out of - that has been struggling to get a run out bush. So we considered nominating it for this Saturday. And we agreed not to as its not really the type of horse the race is for. 7 starts for nothing... After seeing the field i am kicking myself as i am certain we would have got in the money!!!!!! Yes they are good for late starters, but it appears to have been taken over by ones that are even rougher than my roughest. Good for owners and trainers, but i do wonder if it is good for betting and tournover or not!?!?!?!

Which it did, and had to give weight to far better performed horses and earners of stakemoney. Wierd system we have here

Well i've got one in this that we bred. He's obviously had a few setbacks. Costs to date are circa $100k. So a $20k winners cheque plus $5k 1st win bonus at least helps.
And as some people have mentioned, people with slow maturing ones or others that have setbacks and are still maidens at 4, need all the financial incentives they can get.
I'd rather see the 2yo prizemoney halved.
But maybe a $30k maiden once a fortnight, not every week...

I may be out on a limb here, but Mid Week racing is no better than Provincials these days, and some of the Saturday races now no better than Mid Weeks of old, so is it the System that has caused this (In my mind anyway). Maidens at Mid Weeks I am fine with, but not on Saturday programs

there is no difference in prize money between midweek and provincial a, and the races are scaled the same, thus they are the same for all intents and purposes.
i can remember them spruiking the fact that midweek town and provincial a are going to be on a par.

i still get a minor difference between them when i do the numbers usually, but basically they're one and the same.

the saturdays meetings are generally low classed races too, but that's what they decided, so that's what you got.

the horses themselves are probably the same as they always were, or maybe even better, if you take peters nags into account.

but the class system is crap, and cheapens the product.
not to mention it is blatantly unfair.

Not questioning your comment above but Prince Of Thieves won a Maiden yesterday at Mt Barker (Provincial yes ?) and has only gone to a 56 rating, Miss Singapore same same ? Got me confused
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
because mount barker is provincial 'b' which they have 1kg(2 ratings points) weaker, than provincial 'a' and better.
