Yesterday at Mingenew D.R. Miller was successful winning the Mingenew Cup aboard Blazing Ammo. Remember attending the races during primary school and running amuck in the old Ascot leger...was a great spot for kids , plenty of room , tote , bookmakers , fast food , full bar facilities ( cool drink of course - thanks dad! ) what more could a kid want?! Also free to get in which was appealing to my old man!
That is a hell of along time ago..too long... anyway there was this jockey who every race came down the race as they went out onto the track with a smile and a hello. Later on as advanced to high school would see this jockey helping out at Clontarf or Castledare on one of the stands where they would have a mini royal show to help underprivileged kids. His name Danny Miller - and in 2017 he continues unabated , still riding winners with the same look and smile. A great Western Australian sportsman and a good man.

Think during one of the early years attending the leger he rode a WA or Australian Derby winner on a horse named Bottled Sunshine perhaps trained by Colin Hayes. A good name for a horse during those hazy days of summer. The reason remember that one - the old $5 a place I had. That was a huge bet and $5 was invested only on special occasions.

Race 1 was amateur hour when they announced the late scratching and TAB closed betting on the wrong horse.

I concur with the positive comments about Danny Miller. I have related some stories on here previously noting my regard for the man.

    ^^^^ classic pic... =D>

the guy is a legend...cop the bandy legs after about 55yrs of riding.

the man is hall of fame material...hopefully he is in it before he cashes his chips.

a few years ago I was having a yarn with him and you know he said "I am as keen now as I was when I was an apprentice"

Know he has ridden many winners ( understatement ) but one use to back a bit was a bugger of a horse to follow...one of the hardest horses to catch on the punt - but there were days where Danny brought this horse home at a price it's name - Rocky Murano.

Think Dasher rode Stormy Rex for Bart in one of the lead up races to the then Australian derby

Remember being at about the 300 metre mark at Ascot one Railway Stakes and about six hundred from home think it was saw this horse take off with an electrifying sprint...and it kept going! Dashing Dan winning the 1987 Railway aboard Jungle Dawn. Most daring ride seen in a Railway and it came off.

Don't be too hard on the guy for not having many rides , at seventy years of age will be happy if I can just get out of bed in the morning.
