A quick whip around of some major clubs annual reports (AJC RVL etc) shows that approx 60% of the clubs revenue comes from TAB / Bookmaker revenue and that the overall running of the club (staff, marketing, insurance, racecourse maintainence) costs about 40% of turnover. Based on this prize money would effectively be nil without gambling turnover.

In catering for the punting dollar, which for the most part means off course revenue, clubs have largely forsaken the race going public for what is now termed the party crowd. Clubs have more interest in putting on a concert and then proclaiming how successful they are in getting people to come to the races than actually addressing the core issues at fault as to why people don't come for the product alone.

Yes it is true that sponsorship is for small amounts, but that again is more about the people charged with promoting the event and then not having the necessary negotiating skills to sell its true value, because the people sitting across the board room table are better at it than they are.

The only other comment that I wanted to make, and only in a light hearted way, was that 15 years ago when I was racing on bikes in Sydney and I thought it would be a good idea to have a Summer Series of Criterium races, where there was a little bit of money on offer for the guys to race for on Club tracks on a Sunday morning. I was ridiculed and shouted down by the Committee of my Club who said it wouldn't happen.

I'm happy to tell you that I stopped after raising 16 days of sponsorship and races that were so popular that they threatened to destroy the Saturday evening Track season because the gun riders were preferring to wait 12 hours or so and race in my event for bigger prize money. The following season I cut it down to 11 days of racing but more money overall. The first season was won by a former stage winner from the Giro (Tour of Italy) and in both seasons future members of the professional pelaton were regular participants.

It can be done. I've done it before.

Certainly does not apply across the board.

This discussion does raise an interesting reminder. Perth Racing have waved a fond farewell to the outgoing CEO, and I understand that the search for his replacement is about to begin.

I no longer have a direct interest having been expelled for life from the Club, but I'm interested in the direction they will go in, with this new appointment.

If its's Shorty I'll be switching off.

Been told by a well placed source at the station that it is him. From the bookies ring at Ascot I have been told by several that Josh Rodder gets the other chair.

Don't know how good my info is on the second chair, but the first is already a done deal.
Maybe I should have highlighted it back in December.

I think Shortte will be a bit different in his new role

Im prepared to give him a crack and listen for a week or so before I make any criticisms

Cmon Shortte - give it a good crack and bring these doubting thomas's around

Im willing to have a "Yannick Valenti" on it that Shortte becomes a popular man after a while

my thoughts are along the lines of Della,

everyone gets 3 months probation when starting a new job , im prepared to give him time to settle & adjust before a bagging , he sounds like a nice bloke & should be given a go imo.

why is everyone sinking the boot in to someone who hasnt even been announced yet , although i was given a red hot tip before xmas

Good luck Tim, go out with a bang son!
  • Advice for Tim upon leaving

Put half the salt in the kettle, then undo the lid for the next person

Take any loose pens, staplers, petty cash tins etc

Leave a big chuck of chewing gum under the desk

Play all your favorite songs like Show me the way to San Jose and Buxfizz

Create a day of it Goss - poo you pants during the 7 o'clock news and say nothing to Richard.

You know what sort of reaction you will get from him. It will be priceless.

It will be a day you remember forever.

I think the falcon needs a big hug.
Remember mate, we dont all eat nails for brekky, and wash them down with broken glass.
Some of us arent afraid to show our emotions.
If that worries you then too bad!
Timmy was great and you could tell he choked up at the end of the show.
I loved Tim on the show.
And by the way falcon, where should i get out more to?
Where do you go thats so great?
    Enlighten us all.
Not having to work and playing with my kids must sound boring to you.
    I love it.
