Yes it is true that sponsorship is for small amounts, but that again is more about the people charged with promoting the event and then not having the necessary negotiating skills to sell its true value, because the people sitting across the board room table are better at it than they are.
The only other comment that I wanted to make, and only in a light hearted way, was that 15 years ago when I was racing on bikes in Sydney and I thought it would be a good idea to have a Summer Series of Criterium races, where there was a little bit of money on offer for the guys to race for on Club tracks on a Sunday morning. I was ridiculed and shouted down by the Committee of my Club who said it wouldn't happen.
I'm happy to tell you that I stopped after raising 16 days of sponsorship and races that were so popular that they threatened to destroy the Saturday evening Track season because the gun riders were preferring to wait 12 hours or so and race in my event for bigger prize money. The following season I cut it down to 11 days of racing but more money overall. The first season was won by a former stage winner from the Giro (Tour of Italy) and in both seasons future members of the professional pelaton were regular participants.
It can be done. I've done it before.
I no longer have a direct interest having been expelled for life from the Club, but I'm interested in the direction they will go in, with this new appointment.
Im prepared to give him a crack and listen for a week or so before I make any criticisms
Cmon Shortte - give it a good crack and bring these doubting thomas's around
Im willing to have a "Yannick Valenti" on it that Shortte becomes a popular man after a while
everyone gets 3 months probation when starting a new job , im prepared to give him time to settle & adjust before a bagging , he sounds like a nice bloke & should be given a go imo.
why is everyone sinking the boot in to someone who hasnt even been announced yet , although i was given a red hot tip before xmas
