They want you at Ascot, but at what cost....

West Australian Racing
Pay to get in, make the effort to be at the track and then (slap across the face), "two pints please", "that'll be $25  thanks mate".

$12.50 a pint (lets not go food prices!).

Please - isn't, say, $9 a pint fair.

Going to the races in Perth is an expensive day out - it shouldn't be.

without sounding like a tight ****... unless I have a horse racing or can get in for free I generally would avoid going to Ascot during the big meetings

you'd be surprised how popular free entry for the non race goers is at Ascot during the carnival, the amount of people that will go or show interest in going when they open the gates free of charge is amazing and a no brainer reall, the $25 they lose out on entry fees they'd make back on drinks and some more

Free entry has been raised on this forum a number of times.
I am yet to hear a counter argument from the "powers that be" to refute the free entry suggestion.
It must have something to do with the revenue or lost revenue from the "no ticket sales" for Perth Racing.
Maybe the revenue from alcohol, gambling and food get channeled into "non preferred" areas ??
Perhaps free entry takes away from corporate marquee sales where prices are thru the roof.
Be nice to get some transperancy on this one.

The response from Ted Van Heemst at an AGM in answer to this question of free entry, was that it made the product cheaper as a result. This notion of Racing being a 'product' just being another stupid marketing conceived idea that made the sport into a retail product for sale was simply stupid. Nothing destroys the efforts of everyone involved in a sport like an empty grandstand does. Atmosphere is everything to the success of any sporting event, Racing or otherwise. Opening the gates via free admission would be the easiest and first step in getting people back to the sport.

I went to opening day and had a great day out. Great atmosphere and competitive racing. I used my WAROA membership to get through the door for free. I had a win which always makes everything look better, especially when heading to the bar.

Because it is absolutely thieving. Mid strength stubbies were $9 and corona etc were $11 from memory. I nearly fell over when they wanted $25.20 for 2 small plastic cups of vodka and lemonade. At least slug that for a pre mix can, not a shot of vodka and 5c worth of lemonade. They had a Pimms caravan, which is a good idea. Then you see the size of the drink for $12 from basically a premix jug.

That is gauging at its finest. You know its theft when the bar staff sympathize when hey tell you the price haha. There are so many drink promo things they could do I feel but maybe their hands are tied or they are completely out of touch. One thing that always goes well is the corona buckets, I think they do 6 for $40 or something like that in corona bucket with ice. How hard is it to do things like Pimms/Margarita Jugs for $30. Champagne should be cheap as well, costs nothing, well at least the stuff they trot out.

If they are worried about responsible drinking and consequences of over indulgence, maybe train the staff and security in responsible service. If you see a bloke drinking out of the jug, remove them. If someone is acting like a DH over their limit, remove them.

98% of people do the right thing, dont punish them. The price of beverages at the races is inexcusable and just plain theft and will ultimately force people to other options if they havent already.

    spot on, bomber!
I think I saw yellowglen "champagne" for about 30 bucks.....7 in liqourland/dan murphys.
$25.20 for 2 plastic cups of v&l…..you'd feel like saying i'm not paying that much and just walking away from the bar. I doubt they'd charge that much at a swish bar at Crown.

i think the liqour licence prohibits them from running the specials. Its a throwback to the good ol days when perth cup was all about debauchary. Licence conditions have well and truly tightened up drastically because of it.

$12.50 for a fu<king pint?? Are you kidding?? Way to deter more people from coming to the races!! I shouldn't be so shocked, PR is totally clueless

I reckon the trots had the right idea a few years ago. It cost about  $10 or $12 entry and that included 3 or 4 half-price drink vouchers and a couple of half-price food vouchers. Even if you did your dough on the punt you didn't walk away at the end of the night feeling like you'd just been gouged which meant you were more inclined to come back again.

I would guess that the type of people who can’t afford $10 to get in, aren’t the kind of people that anyone would want at their venue.
Not to mention, if you can’t afford entry, what are you doing gambling and buying beer? ????

Who needs to get people back into the sport? It’s second only to AFL for attendance Australia wide.

The term “racing product” is actually a legal term and is stated on the interactive gambling amendment. Link below.

Sorry @Dharris I can't agree with the angle you are pushing. You're saying families on a budget or savvy spenders, which a lot of the younger generation are, shouldn't be PR's target audience??  PR needs the new generation getting involved and unfortunately at present is daylight behind their East Coast counterparts and therefore pricing should reflect that. It's a bit like having to pay AFL prices to go and watch the WAFL. Your thinking sounds very much like what I believe PR are thinking and imo going forward, PR will end up in a worse situation in which they currently are

I understand what you’re saying. But I’m 27 and am part of the next generation. Nothing keeps me away from a place for me more than a bunch of scungy bogan or worse... KIDS.

I’d rather pay the money to go somewhere a little upper class than a place tha will allow any rift raft in.
It’s a classy venue. I think the entry fee keeps it that way.

Story: went to a very pedestrian Saturday meeting last summer, maybe a few hundred people on course.

Now aged in my early 60's, been going to Ascot since the "Leger" days (as opposed to the "Enclosure"). Went to the races almost every Saturday.

Anyway, sitting with two other long standing race going mates. My Buy. Go to bar, "Can I have three stubbies of beer, please?". "Sorry Sir, you can only buy two at a time". "Okay, lets have two then", and I then distribute them to my elderly mates.

I then go back to the bar "Can I have a stubby of beer, please?".  Looking forward to sitting down with my mates having a beer and discussing the next race (barely a person in sight).

"Sorry Sir, due to the laws, I can't serve you for 15 minutes".

No wonder the purists are staying home!?
