Ok, I know I am getting in rather early, and there will be a fair bit of water still to pass under the bridge, but something occured to me last night that makes for some interesting food for thought.

If both Barakey & Magnifisio are to race first up in the Beaufine, then which horse will Jason Brown choose to ride & why?

A bit will depend on barriers, weights etc I know, but if I had to have a guess, I would say Magnifisio. Only because I think she will be more suited to racing first up than Barakey at this stage. Having said that, Browny has had an incredible association with Barakey so it's hard to see him getting out of the saddle for a horse of his quality. I'm having 2nd thoughts about this as I write because at least there are other Jockey's who have ridden Magnifisio with success like Chris Parnham for example.

Looking forward to your thoughts on this one ;)

Magnifisio only beat Elite Belle & Luckygray at WFA over a distance that suited her more than them and she was getting tired on the line. Those two are probably better over longer-Elite Belle's optimum distance is 1400m-1600m & Luckygray,1600m-1800m. If the real Barakey turns up and Magnifisio runs up to the Roma Cup run she won't get anywhere near him. Smoko on the other hand.....

Yes indeed Kram, Smoko is a different kettle of fish completely. There's no guarantee he will be starting in the Beaufine, but if he does, then I think he is every chance to keep his 100% winning strike rate in tact ;)

    Yes indeed.

It's just whether or not he can produce first up after the setbacks he has had.

I hope for the sake of Jim & his owners that he can ;)

Like to think Cool Trade/Trading Day would be getting close enough to tackle that type of event.

Today's West Australian says it all.

Jason B will be riding Barakey & as I suspected, Chris Parnham will be riding Magnifisio on Saturday.

And if these two along with Smoko all take there places on Saturday, then it's going to take a herculean effort for Barakey to win carrying 62kg's. Magnifisio will get 58.5 which is a fair bit for a Mare & Smoko will be on the 54kg minimum.

I know weights don't mean everything over 1000m's, but if Smoko draws a single digit barrier (presuming there at least 14 starters) then it's tough to see him being beaten carrying 54 kg's and having 'The Wizard' on board. But I don't think he will get things his own way in front as all 3 of these runners like to race on the speed.

Bring on the Beaufine I say :-bd

After a good crowd last weekend and a few other okay sort of days lately. I hope the marketing departments of PR and RWWA get together with trainers and owners/jockeys and try to promote this race. even if it doesn't drag more to the track at least it will be something worthwhile to promote..IMO

what did Dueton get??? cant check here

not sure exactly, just read this on twitter/perth racing

Based on smoko - Dueton should get around 56 or 56.5

    Barakey rated 112 - 62kgs
    Magnifisio rated 105 - 58.5kgs
    Dueton rated 92 - ???
    Smoko rated 82 - 54kgs
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
if dueton is rated 92 it will get  54(should get 52) going by the weight for the top two, the same as smoko, who will be miles out of the handicap.
  • TheFunksterTheFunkster    3,840 posts
If they are their ratings then wouldn't Magnifisio get 56.5kgs?
I thought the 2kg sex allowance gets allocated after the ratings assessment?
  • careycarey    6,424 posts
nope funkster, wa is different to the other states, and for once wa has it right, where the others don't.
the rating in wa is absolute.
  • TheFunksterTheFunkster    3,840 posts
Yep, my bad. I got confused with a mare rated 60 will be higher in order of entry than a male rated say 63 due to the 4 point sex allowance

In that case Dueton gets in very well at the weights.  Interested to see the field.

lucky assuming the relative ability of each horse is correct accodring to their current rating then smoko is the worst weighted of these 4, because in fact he should be carrying 15kg less than barakey, which would be 47kg!
that puts him out of the handicap by 7kg.
dueton sould be carrying 52, but will have to have 54.

so the best weighted would be the top two, according the ratings anyway.

so if smoko happened to win, it will likely go straight to a rating of 100!
assuming the race is going to be 96+ which if the paper is right it will be.

I see what you're saying carey - interested to see how Smoko goes against this lot - this is his toughest test to date in he runs!

On first glance, my tip is Magnifisio....gonna be a great viewing race if all of these turn up!
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts

that would be my throw at the board at this time to LL, with a saver on Dueton at odds (are you reading this Punta??). But the bigger issue - depending on how many are in the race - may be the barrier draw.

Barakey needs to come back and prove he is over his injuries to me..Nothing to suggest he isn't but that is why I've gone the Magnifisio way. And would be happy to see Barakey back to his best for all the those connected to him.
